Before you start driving

The complete Oʻahu guide

Eight days from Hale Koa, organized by region so you spend more time experiencing the island and less time sitting in traffic.

Pearl Harbor

Reserve the free USS Arizona boat program about eight weeks ahead.

Diamond Head

Nonresidents need timed entry and parking reservations.

Hanauma Bay

Book at 7 a.m. HST two days ahead; closed Monday and Tuesday.

Your 8-day route

Eight days without racing the clock.

Day1

Arrive gently in Waikīkī

Check in at Hale Koa and keep the first day deliberately light.

  • Fort DeRussy Beach and the U.S. Army Museum of Hawaiʻi
  • Beachfront walk toward the Royal Hawaiian
  • Sunset and an early dinner
Everything worthwhile tonight is walkable from the hotel.
Day2

Pearl Harbor

Book an early USS Arizona program and arrive one hour before the boat time.

  • NPS exhibits and USS Arizona Memorial
  • Battleship Missouri or Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum
  • Optional Punchbowl cemetery stop
Bags are restricted. Leave nothing visible in the car.
Day3

Diamond Head and the southeast coast

The most reservation-sensitive day of the trip.

  • Diamond Head at opening
  • Hanauma Bay snorkeling
  • Halona Blowhole and Makapuʻu coast
Put Hanauma Bay on Wednesday through Sunday.
Day4

Historic Honolulu

The Hawaiian story that Waikīkī cannot tell.

  • Prebooked ʻIolani Palace tour
  • Aliʻiōlani Hale and Kawaiahaʻo Church
  • Bishop Museum and Tantalus Lookout
Palace tickets are online-only; dress respectfully.
Day5

The green Windward coast

Let the Koʻolau scenery, not a checklist, set the pace.

  • Nuʻuanu Pali Lookout
  • Hoʻomaluhia Botanical Garden
  • Byodo-In Temple and Kualoa Regional Park
The free regional park provides the signature Kualoa view.
Day6

North Shore

Surf country, botanical Waimea, and a slower pace.

  • Haleʻiwa before tour buses
  • Waimea Valley
  • Waimea Bay, Sunset Beach, and Laniākea
Use legal parking and stay at least 10 feet from turtles.
Day7

Leeward flex day

Use Ko Olina as your sunny-side backup or recovery day.

  • Arrive early for public lagoon parking
  • Swim, picnic, or prebook a boat outing
  • Return before commuter traffic builds
Beaches are public; resort pools and chairs are not.
Day8

A low-stress finish

Stay close to Hale Koa so travel timing cannot derail the final day.

  • Magic Island and Ala Moana Beach Park
  • One last Waikīkī swim
  • Pack, refuel, and allow extra airport time
Move Tantalus here or book the Hale Koa lūʻau if you have a full day.

If plans change

Protect these six experiences.

01

Pearl Harbor

History and remembrance, not just a photo stop.

02

ʻIolani Palace

The clearest doorway into the Hawaiian Kingdom.

03

Windward drive

The Koʻolau range is the island’s most cinematic landscape.

04

North Shore

Surf culture, country pace, and Waimea Valley.

05

Hanauma Bay

A protected reef when reservations and conditions cooperate.

06

One slow sunset

The part overstuffed itineraries forget.

Tourist traps, decoded

Not scams—just poor trades for your time.

Pearl Harbor packages

Usually unnecessary with your car

Third-party tours do not unlock special USS Arizona tickets.

Dole Plantation

Skip unless the train, maze, or kids appeal

Do not sacrifice Waimea Valley or coast time for it.

Laniākea traffic jam

Stop only if parking is legal

Never block traffic or approach turtles.

Discount activity desks

Read the obligation

Deals may require a long timeshare presentation.

Hanauma Bay resellers

Use the city reservation page

You already have a rental car.

Circle-island marathon

Do not rush one giant lap

Traffic turns it into a windshield day.
