Interstate-first route

Use the highway spine, then earn the detours.

The table keeps the main roads visible. It is a planning framework, not a promise: use live navigation and official road information for the actual departure day.

Ten planned legs + flexible return

Four hours maximum between rests.

Choose safe 30-minute rests and overnight locations from live conditions; never drive more than four hours without a real break.

Drive times exclude rests, meals, fuel, traffic, weather, construction, and city parking. After Greeley, Lincoln, Des Moines, South Bend, Cleveland, and Buffalo are through-points only. The map’s POIs, Costco stations, and diners are optional possibilities rather than scheduled stops. The complete loop is roughly 6,100 miles.

Check before turning the key

Five places can change the route.

Grand Canyon South Rim

The South Rim is open year-round, but snow, road conditions, shuttle routes, parking, lodging, and facility hours vary.

Zion Canyon

During shuttle season, private vehicles are generally not permitted on Zion Canyon Scenic Drive. Check the final shuttle back before entering the canyon.

Acoma Sky City

Acoma is a sovereign tribal community. Tours, closures, cultural rules, and photography permissions must be confirmed with the Pueblo.

I‑80/I‑90 toll corridor

The shortest eastern route uses toll facilities through northern Indiana, Ohio, and New York. Check toll payment, construction, and traffic before committing to the corridor.

Four-hour driving blocks

Build the trip around the driver, not the odometer.

Thirty minutes means thirty

Leave the car, walk, hydrate, and reset for at least 30 minutes. Fuel-only stops do not automatically count as a meaningful rest.

Fuel before the empty stretch

Refuel before western park approaches, tribal lands, and mountain crossings. Do not assume the next service shown on a map is open.

Change drivers early

Swap before fatigue becomes obvious. Stop at least every two hours, walk, drink water, and never use an attraction deadline to justify unsafe driving.

Save offline information

Download navigation, park maps, reservations, passes, hotel details, and emergency contacts before leaving reliable service.

Watch local time

Confirm reservations in local time. Arizona's daylight-saving rules differ from neighboring states and from the Navajo Nation.

Carry a weather range

This route spans Atlantic rain, southern heat, plains wind, high desert, and mountain snow. Keep water, warm layers, rain gear, and sun protection accessible.

GPS Guidance

On a phone using the HTTPS site, tap “GPS Guidance,” then “Start live GPS” and allow location access. The blue pulsing dot and accuracy circle stay on your device. The destination menu can guide toward the next planned destination, next mapped Costco station, or next mapped American diner. Distance and time are route-based estimates—not live traffic navigation.

National-park reality: a scenic drive is not a substitute for a rest day. Grand Canyon, Zion, and Dinosaur each deserve time outside the car; reserve lodging before building the route around them.
